Donkey of the Week...

What is it with these people?

First we had the Arab world's version of Tom, *** and Harry seemingly trying their best to sink us, then we have the Prem, Tax man and of course the media. Each wanting their pound of flesh. And then some.

And now, with the timing of a politician waiting in the wings, we have Portsmouth City Council adding to our woe.

On the face of it Gerald Vernon-Jackson's opening comments on Sky yesterday were good. He said, as have we all in the past, that the Prem need to get to grips with the ownership problem and ensure that owners can afford to run the clubs they buy.

But, what he said next, in full view of the world, was not so clever.

"You don't go into buying a football club to make money, you go into it to lose money..."

Now I ask you. What sort of thing is that to be saying on TV when it is likely to be seen all around the world?

I have it on good authority that the Club is far from pleased with the council and based on comments like this, I can understand why.

What Vernon-Jackson should have said is this:

"The Council will work with investors to ensure that their ownership experience is as profitable and enjoyable as possible..."

But no, he just had to have a dig. And I don't think it was a very smart thing to do. Councillors and for that matter MPs in and around this City, should in part be standing on a ticket supporting PFC and its ambitions. After all, the Club's supporters and a significant percentage of voters are one and the same.

So there we have it.

Donkey of the Week, or quite possibly the last 10 years, is ....

Portsmouth City Council

And how about this Mike Hall and the rest of the guys at SOS Pompey.

Why not stand at the local council elections AND put forward a candidate for the House of Commons this year?

myPompey will gladly pay the £500 deposit necessary for one of you to stand as an MP, and I reckon if enough fan sites support the Campaign, we will have power in the Council and possibly a voice in the Commons too!  Now that would be progress!

See here for the rules governing standing for Parliament.

Poor Mr VJ must have been star-struck at getting an airing on the tv. I bet council meetings ground to a halt as he sat in this office waiting for his interview to come back on Sky Sports News.

One thought regarding the protest meeting that was cancelled yesterday. Is it coincidental that Chennai was at meetings in London on that day. Maybe one of them was at PL HQ and they didn't want pesky PFC fans to spot him there? I still believe it's a good they will meet tomorrow but it does seem highly coincidental.

A Gerald Ratner moment from a council leader, who are, as we all know, utterly moral and transparent in their financial dealings...which is why they would support open book reconcilliation of their assets pre and post appointment...they are, as they keep telling us, there to serve the people and not to line their own pockets!

heee-hooorrr ... ... city expert on talksport said that every EPL club could realise a profit for there investors if they kept there money in and took a five year view.

... every single club has massively risen in value over a ten yea period, look again in ten years and the profits and returns will be huge for the investor willing to wait.

you have gone and done it now Chris,If PS reads this he will be thinking of running for parliament himself with the slogan"i love you ,i love me, i love Pompey" or Jamo could run for Westminster "England's number one football intellect(remember i do write a column in a broadsheet)"

that comment ranks up with my all time favourite football quote...... "i'm opening a boutique"........

for all you youngsters, that was john cleese in monty python, playing the part of a star footballer being interviewed, no matter what question he was asked, he would just look vacant and reply to it in a dumb voice, maybe P C C could run thier own version at the kings theatre....monty pythons flying council.......

Just to correct one point here - the SOS pompey and Premier League meeting was not cancelled or even rescheduled, it goes ahead later in the week.

As for standing for the council/parliament; I started the Pompey Party with Ashley Brown in 93 which most will remember so I am not averse to doing it if necessary. Once we had won the vote for Parkway in the Council I then stood for the COuncil (Peckham) as a Lib Dem and won Charles Dickens ward from Labour. Having done my two years getting peoples housing points bumped and fixing peoples broken security doors I had done my bit and packed it in in 96.

Now as for GVJ; I have done a lot of work with him for the Pompey Supporters Trust on securing Fratton Park  if the club folds. Not only has he wrapped up FP in red tape so tight it would be virtually impossible for a developer to do anything, he has also stated his intention to work with any community oriented organisation and business in terms of ensuring a new club got off the ground or one bought from administration.

What he said here was clearly badly phrased. I think he was trying to say what Gaydamak said and what any potential investor in Pompey knows - you take your profit when you exit by selling the club for more than you paid for it.

For at least two or three years any new owner will have to sustain losses at the club.

Badly phrased but ALL the local political leaders and MPs are completely committed to helping the club....as we have all the co-operation and commitment we need from everyone, Tories, Labour and Lib Dem any entry into the political arena would do more harm than good......in my opinion.

Are we really expecting our councillors to work for US now?

I mean, isn't that expecting a little too much of them? After all, they didn't work hard to get elected so they could spend their time thinking about what is best for Portsmouth, did they.

Badly phrased Mike Hall? Given he's a politican, he knew exactly what he was saying and the ramifications.

It's one thing being a fan thrust into the limelight - but quite another being an experienced pro such as he.

Chris, in my job I'm a trained negotiator and I manage serious escalations for massive corporations. I still say the wrong thing and so do politicians.

I agree it was a stupid thing to say but Gerald has gone out of his way to help the club. In fact, I think todays takeover partially results from Gerald making absolutely clear to Chainrai that if the club was liquidated he will get nothing for the land. It left Chainrai in a position of booting the people out or burning his money!

Mike Hall : Maybe he did tie up the ground situation but this was done mostly in the first place with a bit of twicking over time as developers got greedy or chance there arm.

Trying to score points with fans after the world cup fiaco but did'nt say about the money wasted prior to the decision.

I live in Romsey but family live in Pompey and wonder what other pearls of wisdom he's got?

"Foot in Mouth " me thinks
