  • Yeah but, no but

Seems like Vicky Redknapp has even managed to p*ss off the Spanish waiter with claims that she's been touching up Robbie Keane. Or should that be tapping up. When pressed by the press to explain her comments Vicky, denied any wrong doing:

"... Yeah but, no but, yeah but I was just responding to a journalist's questions"

Vicky with her new Youth Academy and later denying she's full of hot air.

  • Defoe out for Season?

News is surfacing that Lemsip has fractured his metatarsal during a training session on Thursday morning. According to reports this 'freak' accident will keep him out til the end of the season and has Hotspur desperately seeking a Susan to go with Sandra.

If true this is dreadful news for Defoe who will miss the Carling Cup Final (shame) and  .... Redknapp, but rather good news for the rest of teams near the bottom of the table.

    The weekend's looking up.

Or rather it was. Spurs are now saying that they are hopeful that Defoe will not be out for more than a month, although whether this is wishful thinking or not remains to be seen.

  • Giovani dos Santos

After listening to Tony telling us that he won't go for players that aren't fit or who are unable to fit straight into the team, it comes as some surprise to hear Sky Sports reporting that we are in talks with Mr Mitty about bringing Spurs reject Giovani dos Santos to Pompey.

Santos 19, is a Mexican international and joined Juande Ramos' team of dieters in the summer, although hasn't figured much for Redknapp. Something to do with Sandra not speaking Spanish.

It's a nice Friday night filler for you folks out there, but I don't think we should take this too seriously.

  • Keeping Mum

I had to check the date this morning, wondering if it was either Friday the 13th or April 1st.

Apparently if Santa Cruz moves on, Fat Sam will put a bid in for Birthday boy Peter Crouch (28 today). Sure Sam why not. Take him. We can survive without any strikers and anyway, why wouldn't we send our top scorer to a rival relegation contender?

News also that Adams has turned his attention to Benjani. Weren't you just waiting for that one? Plus Wenger is about to help Adams outs by sending us two young loaners, despite the fact we only have one domestic slot open.

The above are sure signs that Pompey aren't about to do anything in the remaining couple of days or we are doing a great job of keeping Mum....  you decide.

  • Utaka: Catch 22?

Despite losing against Villa, there were many positives.

    Mullens, Pennant and.. Utaka.

Adams has said that Utaka wants to play through the middle, indeed most of his goals have come from bullying and skilful runs through the center and around the keeper. But with Utaka having been sidelined for months through injury and others such as Kanu and Nugent ahead of him in the queue to play, it's unlikely that this extraordinary (when he can be bothered) talent will get many chances to prove himself in that position. Don't take my word for it. Adams has said as much this week.

Which leads us to ask why clubs in similar positions don't arrange B team friendlies. Yes, I know we have the Reserves but the second string fixtures have always struck me as inert, a poor man's A team if you like.

Why would we not arrange the odd match against Arsenal Fulham or West Ham with the express aim of bringing the likes of Utaka to fitness and also testing him against better quality players than tend to make the Reserves? By definition the Reserves are full of players that can't make the First Team, yet there is nowhere to get a First Team player match fit without playing in the real thing. Catch 22.

It seems daft that teams are forced to field unfit players. Clearly a 'run out' in the Reserves is not a substitute for the Premier League, but a series of B matches might well be. It would be a lot better than seeing us lose matches because we are forced to field players in order to get them fit.

To shed more light on this problem, it seems that the Sunny deal has fallen through and possibly Saviola too. Why? Because "we need someone able to come in and play now...." and both are short of match fitness...

    Thoughts?

Seriously, we have been considering carrying more general news and daily weather forecasts.

How timely that might be with Sky reporting that Sunny is about to join on loan til the end of the season.

  • Dear Tony

I know you are busy so just a quick note.

First, well done with yesterdays new arrivals. Both exciting players and I don't see how you could have done much better than Mullens. I feel totally comfortable with him starting tonight.

Pele looks good too. Reminds me a bit of Fernandes. I agree, these young southern Europeans need a while to adjust to the tempo of the Prem. Let's hope he can acclimatize sooner rather than later.

Just a quick question before I go. Will we ever replace the long range shooting ability of Matty, Muntari and Mendes? I can't remember the last time we hammered one in from 30 yards. Wasn't it against Villa last season? Wouldn't it be great if we could do that again tonight?

So just a thought as you go about your transfer business. We don't have anybody with the possible exception of Belhadj, who will run from midfield and bury it with the outside of the boot. And that's worrying... and if you do find someone who's also handy with dead balls including penalties, so much the better.

Don't forget to wrap up warm tonight.

    Uncle Chris

  • Man City fixture re-arranged

    From P.F.C

Pompey’s postponed Premier League clash with Manchester City at Fratton Park has been re-arranged for Saturday, February 14, kick-off 3pm.

The game was called off earlier this month because of a frozen pitch.

February 14 is a free date for both sides because that weekend has been set aside for FA Cup fifth round ties, and both clubs are out of the competition.

  • Saviola & Emerson to sign?

The Mail and others are carrying reports that Real Madrid's Argentinian striker Javier Saviola is about to join Pompey on loan.

Apparently he's going to watch the Villa match tomorrow night before putting pen to paper.

News also that Emerson is about to sign, although I checked the date and it's mid Jan not Christmas!

We don't want to say too much until these stories are confirmed.

    Play up Pompey!

  • Blues Make Double Swoop

    Courtesy of P.F.C

Pompey have signed Hayden Mullins and Portuguese midfielder Pele.

Midfielder Mullins, who has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal, joins Pompey from West Ham for an undisclosed fee.

Pele has signed on loan from Porto until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old – whose full name is Vitor Hugo Gomes Passos – has joined the Blues with a view to a permanent deal.

Both are eligible to make their debuts in Tuesday night’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa at Fratton Park.

Mullins will wear the No 6 shirt. Pele will wear No 26.

Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie said: “Hayden and Pele will add strength to our midfield. Central midfield was an area we needed to strengthen – that’s why we’ve brought in two players.

“Both players have been on our radar for a while. But we wanted them here in time to beat Monday’s midday deadline to play against Aston Villa. I brought all my staff into the club on a Sunday night to get the deal done.

“Tony and I decided to move for Hayden on Saturday night. We got hold of West Ham on Sunday morning and I think they were a bit surprised that we wanted to get the deal done so quickly.

“Hayden’s an experienced player who has played exceptionally well against us in the past.

“He’s a guy with immense experience in the Premier League, and that’s what we need in this situation.

“He wanted regular football because he has been in and out of the West Ham side. We’ve been very successful getting players in who have wanted regular football and then blossomed for us when they have been given it.

“Pele’s an exciting young talent. He did well for Inter before joining Porto.

“But there was a change of manager at Porto who switched it around a bit and the boy was desperate to move.

“I spoke to him on Saturday evening and he was on the plane here within 24 hours, which tells you exactly about his eagerness.

“He’s an expensive player, so it’s a deal with an option to buy so we can both have a look at each other. It’s very similar to what we did with Nadir Belhadj.

“We hope he’ll do very, very well. He’s a strong lad who’s very athletic and gets around the pitch.”

Mullins made 213 appearances for the Hammers after arriving from Crystal Palace in 2003.

He came through the youth ranks at Selhurst Park, scoring 20 goals in 256 appearances.

Mullins has been a regular in Gianfranco Zola’s side this season, and came on as a substitute in Saturday’s FA Cup victory at Hartlepool.

Pele joined the Portuguese champions from Inter Milan last summer.

He was part of the Inter side that won the Italian league title last season, making his Serie A debut against Sampdoria in September 2007.

Pele also bagged a stunning strike in the Italian Cup final, as Inter lost 2-1 to Roma.

He has represented Portugal at both under-20 and under-21 level.

The pair will fortify a Blues midfield depleted by injury, with Papa Bouba Diop (knee), Richard Hughes (hamstring) and Niko Kranjcar (groin) all sidelined.

Storrie revealed Pompey’s transfer-window activity was not over.

He said: “We’re looking to bring in a striker before the window shuts, and maybe another midfielder.”

  • Hayden Mullins set for Pompey?

The Daily Mail are claiming that West Ham midfielder Hayden Mullins will be joining Pompey following a medical and both sides agreeing terms.

Mullins, 29, is a defensive midfielder having spent his entire career at Crystal Palace and West Ham.

A fee of £2m has been mentioned, although as we have come to learn fees mean little in this age of deferred payments and bonuses.

Mullins is not known for his goals, having hit the back of the net only 22 times in 400 club appearances, but he will make a good addition to the squad and with the current injury problems will likely move straight into the first team If he joins.

Alan Pardew on Mullins signing for West Ham: (from Wiki)

He is someone we are going to look to when we are up against it, to win the battle and give the room to play. He is very much a destroyer and I think we are desperate for one of those.

  • Empty Seats - Price Conquers All

My Eight-year-old looked into the bag and spied the chocolate-covered strawberry. “Just one?” he asked with equal parts indignation and incredulity.

“That cost me three pounds,” I responded defensively.

“I wish they were cheap,” Stanley said as the treat succumbed to dental destruction.

    “Then we could have lots."

And there you have it: proof that price conquers all.

If the shop wants to sell me a dozen chocolate strawberries, all they have to do is lower the price. Dramatically. Of course, they can’t do that. Ingredients, labour, Transport, administration, marketing, rent, fancy bags– it all adds up.

By the same token, there’s only one way Football clubs seeking to sell FA Cup seats in today’s market can stimulate sales: slash their prices by 75 percent or so. Of course, they can’t do that. Or can they?

On the positive side, the fire sale of empty FA Cup seats would provide access to high quality Premier League football for a lot of low income buyers.

Ask an eight year old: Everything sells at a price.
