  • The long and the short of the Crouch & Rooney partnership

Looks like they might be partnering each other on Wednesday.

Here's a reminder of how well they work with each other.

  • England players get shirty

Good result for Beckham and his fashionista buddies last night even if Slovakia looked like they'd rather be in the terraces than on the pitch.

4 nil was about right, but how much of that was down to the new space age come retro kit the team were wearing? Maybe the new design was a celebration of the planned record appearance of fashion centre Milan, based Beckham, or was it just another piece of the football marketing mega machine?

Probably the latter. Wembley stadium refinanced its construction debt last year and will now pay back its loans in 2023 as opposed to 2018. The cost of this restructuring will reduce annual repayments by £3m but will substantially increase the overall cost of the loan.

The FA contributes £12m a year towards the Stadium which made a £21m loss in 2007, although the ‘money men' are spinning a substantial profit from this year on.

Some good news for Pompey, Crouch looks like he's ok after his brief second half performance was ended following a rare act of passion from a Slovakian player.

  • Gekas scores for Greece

    Israel v Greece
    Saturday, 28 March 2009
    FIFA World Cup European Qualifying

Theo Gekas earned a point for Greece in their Euro qualifying match against Israel.

Gekas pounced in the 42nd minute to slot home from close range following a rebound.

The 'Pompey striker' was then denied in injury time with the match against Israel ending 1-1.

Let's hope somebody from PFC was there to watch!

  • Lord Mawhinney adds to financial gloom

Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney believes the full extent of the recession has not yet hit clubs:

"Season tickets, corporate hospitality and commercial sponsorships were all negotiated a year ago.

"They're about to start doing that for next season and there will be a reality check for some clubs.

Earlier in the week Wigan's Chairman Dave Whelan added to the negative outlook when he told BBC Radio 5 Live:

"I have no doubt it will happen in the Premier League that a club will go into receivership.

Football League rules state that clubs in financial trouble that go into administration will be deducted 10 points as happened to League Two Darlington last month.

But clubs who go into administration after the 26 March deadline face having their 10-point deduction suspended.

If the club is relegated the points will be deducted from their tally at the start of next season but if the club stays up the 10 points will be taken off their final total.

The club would then go down if the 10-point deduction subsequently resulted in it slipping into a relegation place.

  • Pompey keeper squeals like a little girl

Shock revelations from Fratton Park as Head Physio Garry Sadler revealed that reserve keeper Jon Stewart "Squealed like a little girl" after receiving an injection for an injured hip. The 6ft 4" keeper was also heard to call for his Mum but later begged backroom staff to keep his embarrassing outburst quiet. Don't worry Jon we will do our best!

Meanwhile Pennant should be back training next week and if all goes well will be available for selection.

Crouch has minor inflammation in his calf but should be fine for the Hull match as long as he is not risked unnecessarily by the England team.

Marc Wilson has recovered from mumps and a pulled hamstring and is back in training and should feature for the reserves soon.

So too Jamie Ashdown who has been back in training for the past week or so.

And now the big one. Diop is running in a straight line but twisting and turning is still a bit of a problem. Sadler is hopeful Diop will be back before the end of the season but there are no guarantees.

Diop -  much needed. Much missed.

  • Whelan issues warning over major club bankruptcy

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan today warned that one of the major clubs is in danger of going into receivership as a result of debt and called for the Government to intervene in the way clubs are run.

He said: "In The Premier League at the moment, there are a lot of foreign people who have put loans into football clubs.

"If you have a loan in a football club and that person decides to leave - he wants his loan back - that makes that club bankrupt.

"It is the same at Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool. There are a lot of clubs with a lot of debt as a loan instead of it being equity and shares in the company.

"[The owners] can walk away but, if they have shares in the company, they have to sell shares and it doesn't affect the club.

"What has happened for the last four or five years, with Manchester City being the latest, is foreign people have come in and poured in money in the form of a loan.

"If they sell that club or get fed up and walk away, how are they going to get their money? They're going to put the club into receivership.

"That is what worries me about The Premier League most of all at the moment. I'm putting my case forward to The Premier League to say, ‘Can we have equity in clubs and not loans?'"

Whelan went on to add that Wigan only have debt of £15m and intend if possible to reduce that to zero over the next 18 months.

Whelan's comments coincide with P.F.C issuing a statement correcting misleading press reports about Sacha Gaydamak's asking price for the Club. This follows earlier reports that a Swiss consortium on trying to buy P.F.C. for £1, suggested Mr Gaydamak sold players to repay his Director's loan.

  • Middlesbrough fans: Steve Gibson as good as he sounds?

During the January transfer window Middlesbrough Chairman Steve Gibson made it clear to Pompey that Gary O'Neil was needed for the ‘Boro relegation fight and was going nowhere.

And now with ‘Boro struggling, Gibson is on the record again, only this time giving his support to the thoroughly decent Gareth Southgate:

"I couldn't expect any more from him in terms of blood, sweat and tears.

"We can't put what happens on the pitch fully on Gareth's shoulders, and that's why we have to share the workload and the responsibility.

"When things go wrong, people lose faith in the manager. But there is a lot more involved and we must always continue to look at the wider picture before coming to decisions."

Of course we are all familiar with the say one thing then do the other culture of the Premier League, but Gibson for one, does come across as being sincere and very capable.

Gibson was born in Middlesbrough and was given freedom of the town after ‘Boro won the League Cup in 2004 and appears at face value to be the model English Chairman.

    ‘Boro fans?

  • Everton impressed with Pompey's high rise development

David Moyes has been commenting on the prowess of Peter Crouch:

    "Two corners, two goals.

"...he's very good at it and we didn't cope particularly well with it.

But it shouldn't have come as too much of a surprise given Crouch spent time just up the road at Anfield. Luckily for Everton, Crouch didn't convert his flying overhead kick, a goal that would have taken his tally to 12 league goals for the season and 17 in all competitions.

As it is Crouch is now on 11 and 16, not a bad return from a player initially brought in to play second fiddle to Defoe's highly strung violin.

Finally, a little bit of advice for Moyes, or for that matter, any team planning on thwarting our 2 metre goal machine:

The only way to stop a high rise is with preventative planning and if that doesn't work try a tower block....

    Pick that one out...

  • Mixed messages coming out of Fratton Park

We'd all agree yesterday was a very good performance by the boys. Two great goals and work ethic to die for... or perhaps not.

According to resident bad timing expert David James, some of his fellow teammates are not up for a scrap.  Presumably he's referring to those that can't make the starting 11, because there was no sign of it yesterday.

I've been wracking my brains trying to work out who he's referring to and can't really point the finger at anybody, but clearly he reckons not everybody is pulling their weight.

What is evident is that despite all the pre-match team bonding hugs, body language between the players in the heat of the moment is hardly what you'd call sweet and lovely, especially at the back and I wonder if all is well between Campbell, Distin and James.  There doesn't appear to be a great deal of love lost between them and you wonder whether lack of harmony in the most crucial area on the pitch was behind that terrible series of results.

Distin you may recall said that he didn't share the opinion of others that Adams was the root cause of their collective bad form, this coming days after James had launched another anti Adams salvo.

Perhaps this latest James revelation is just another round of in fighting between the senior pros at the back and is even more surprising when morale is meant to be very high with Hart and Storrie both saying how well things are going in training.

Either way it would be most welcome if they all kept their opinions to themselves over the next few weeks and on the back of a good win yesterday, there is no reason to be pointing the finger at anybody.

  • Statement from LMA

    Statement from League Managers' Association

Interesting lower league news concerning local clubs.

    STATEMENT FROM RUSSELL SLADE

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Russell Slade has moved to set the record straight about his departure from Yeovil Town FC - refuting claims of gross misconduct made by his former employers.

He said, "I want to put the record straight following Yeovil Town's seriously inaccurate statement about me, released on their website last night. Firstly, I want to confirm that at no stage have I ever committed any misconduct at Yeovil Town or indeed at any time in my career.

"Throughout Yeovil's inquiry into this matter, which has been ongoing since November 2008, I have been assured by the League Managers Association’s legal team that I have no case to answer and am innocent of any misconduct.

"Having left Yeovil Town on 15th February, I attended an internal hearing with the club on 27 February 2009, during which they backed down and offered me a confidential compensation package with an agreed departure by mutual consent.

"I was pleased to reach an amicable resolution of the matter on that day and we all shook hands on the agreement. The agreement was also then confirmed in writing.

"I want to stress that I had no job to go to when the deal was done. I left Yeovil on 15th February and accepted the job of manager at Brighton & Hove Albion on 5th March, having met with Brighton chairman Knight for the first time a few days previously.

"After accepting the job with Brighton, and following Yeovil's recent results, Yeovil Town have now tried to completely renege on our agreement. Even worse, they issued an inaccurate and seriously, I am advised, defamatory statement, and I am therefore obliged to set the record straight.

"Due to Yeovil's unfortunate actions, the matter is now with the LMA's lawyers, Russell Jones & Walker, and I am sure that full details will be made known in due course."

  • Dad's Army

What with 3 of our next 4 games in our own backyard and the our aging defence looking ever more like something out of the home guard, you could be forgiven for thinking we are relying increasingly on Dad's Army to keep the enemy at bay.

Not as though that's a bad thing. Sol and Distin are getting it together and Jamo is back on top form even if last week his moustache made him look like an extra from Nacho Libre.

Talking of fashion sense. Did you catch the Niko interview? Cute yankee accent and that scarf giving him a dress sense straight out of the new romantics.. or was it a memento from their recent trip to Dubai.

Take a look at the interview and listen out for the Boro crowd comments.

  • Hull's Brown feeling the strain following Emirates defeat

Hull manager Phil Brown gave a very emotive and audibly shaky interview on 5 Live this morning. He was talking about the alleged spitting incident that took place at the end Hull's defeat to Arsenal in the Cup at the Emirates last night.

His tone was very similar to Keegan in his roller coaster heyday and following suggestions by the interviewer that he was upset, he countered by implying that nothing was further from the truth given Hull had managed to get ‘up the nose' of a top team.  Brown went on to say that Wenger also refused to shake his hand last night and when Hull beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates earlier in the season.

Who knows what went on in the tunnel after the match, but when the interviewer suggested that there were two sides to every story, Brown retorted by asking whether the interviewer questioned his integrity.

Compelling radio even if it did feed off the palpable strain of a manager on the edge of a relegation battle. It just goes to show that Premier League managers really do have a tough job even if some of them manage to keep it under wraps better than others.

Pompey fans will appreciate what Brown has achieved at Hull. He's clearly a top manager and we wish him all the best.
